The Summer Prince

August 15, 2012 by alaya 8 Comments

My next novel will be something completely different. A YA science fiction novel set on the coast of Brazil (the modern state of Bahia), 400 years in the future. Pretty much everything here is something I haven’t done before: A standalone, science fiction, YA, Brazil. Even so, I hope those of you who have enjoyed my other novels will give it a shot (and hopefully, some new people will find their way to my work).

I wrote a post back when it was first announced about how I came to write The Summer Prince. You can read a basic description on Goodreads. Or you can just sit back and enjoy the cover:

Hi Ms. Johnson! Just wanted to say that I just finished The Summer Prince (like seriously, five minutes ago) and aggggghhhhh it’s wonderful. Reading it was such a roller-coaster; the world-building is my absolute favourite aspect. Thank you for writing it.

Just read the advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book and let me just say that it is absolutely AMAZING!!! A blended genre, blended cultures, and blended sexuality in a matriarchal society. A treatise on technology and the future of technology infused society. Amazing dystopian YAL. Thank you so much for writing this! I want to read it again and again and again!

I’m trying to condense all my emotions into a coherent review. But until then all I can say is thanks.

I’m about 30 pages from the last season (Winter) and I’m loving it already. The whole idea about gay and lesbian marriages and affairs being pretty much normal in a Utopian society such as Palmares Tres is incredible. Thank you for such a different and refreshing book.

Hello! I just wanted to thank you for writing such an amazing book! Although it has torn my heart to shreds, brought tears to my eyes every time I think about it, I loved it! I read it all in one day because I couldn’t put it down. So, thank you! One request, please: I would really love a sequel, preferably one with a happy ending. 🙂

The Summer Prince was an inspiration to me. I loved June the most with her huge character arc. I think a lot of people want everything spelled out easy for them, but June was more akin to a real teenage girl. I didn’t even mind the love triangle because it was so different than the stereotype. I have read some more negative reviews of the book lately and I wanted to say that it is my favorite book. I hope you can take that as a complement.
